They seek opportunities to help other people; taking vicarious pleasure in others’ wellbeing and joy. Such people give much of themselves and are aware of the positive impact they can have on others.

Self-esteem and self-awareness, along with the emotional quotient (EQ) is improved by developing genuine care and concern for other people and thinking beyond oneself.

Whilst depression is complicated and vastly different for distinct individuals, the involvement in sports, recreation and community projects are active strategies and a way forward to lift one’s mood and to start thinking beyond the ego.

What a great night it was at Erawan for our 2019 Christmas Party. Only a couple of members were unable to make it, and those that were there certainly got into the Christmas spirit. The ‘White Elephant’ session was kept in line perfectly by Joan Jackson, who, judging by her prowess, has played the game once or twice before. Not sure which gift was the most sought after: the Lego set or the Goat Cheese Cooker 🙂

Today the Rotary Club of Buderim hosted the Sunshine Safari Rotary Exchange students for lunch at Lion’s Park Buderim. These students are a mixture of those from overseas who are half way through their exchange, and Qld students who will head off early next year to various countries. What a delight it is to meet these intelligent,motivated, polite young people and know that they have a great future ahead of them. The respect they show, not only to us ‘Oldies’, but to each other is wonderful to behold. Good luck guys! And no, they’re not all on their phones! They compose and sing songs about their adventure and the words are on their phones.

What a fantastic night last night at the Buderim Carols! Just a wonderful, family event epitomizing why we love this community of ours. Great work BWMCA & how good is our local Bendigo Bank the way they support our community? The Rotary Club of Buderim is proud to be able to support this wonderful yearly tradition.

Another successful Bunnings BBQ under our belt. It was a hot day but that didn’t stop the team from plating up some delicious culinary fare. Amazing just how good a simple sausage & onion on fresh bread (with sauce) can be.

A big ‘Thankyou’ to Elly who, even though she is not yet a Buderim Rotary member, came along to help at the BBQ. It was a fun day & despite the fact that she possibly went to sleep that night ears still ringing with “One with & one without” I suspect she’ll be back for more. Thanks Elly!

A great meeting at Jampa’s Spirit of Tibet at Forest Glen. We were happy to welcome our District Governor Darryl Iseppi and his fiance Laura, as well as Assistant Governor Wendy Gilson.

Jampa’s is an amazing venue with great food, and we were proud to showcase Sunshine Coast hospitality.

But most important of all, Bob was able to partake of his favorite Goat Curry!

Each year the Rotary Club of Buderim sponsors students wanting to attend the National Youth Science Forum in ACT. These are students who are focused on STEM subjects and wish to pursue a career in one of these disciplines. The students apply for a subsidy from our club and go through a selection process. They then must go through another selection process to attend the forum.

Each year these students come to the club to tell us a little about themselves, and each year we are blown away by their motivation, focus and dedication. We never cease to be amazed at how full their lives are; not just with academia, but with a balance of sport, music and academic pursuit.

Listening to Emma & Lauren speak today, we have no doubt that they are worthy recipients of the subsidy, and will go on to achieve their dreams.

Today we had Emma Wright from Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade tell us more about this very worthwhile group of dedicated volunteers spreading some Christmas cheer to the less fortunate in our community. The SCBB collect and sort donations from the public and other organizations, and deliver them to families in need.

Our members were encouraged to either bring along goods, or purchase a Lion’s Christmas Cake or pudding to donate. This has the added benefit of the proceeds going to Buderim Lions, and therefore back into our local community. A great example of local community groups working together to look after those in our community who are less fortunate.

This week we were grateful to have Senior Constable Aaron Caldwell from the Buderim Police Beat address our meeting. Aaron’s presentation about the growing ice epidemic was both informative and confronting. The list of chemicals found in these drugs, such as drain-cleaner, paint thinnner, acetate etc, is horrifying, but what is more horrifying is the fact that people are prepared to introduce these poisons into their bodies initially, and then unable to stop. Apart from the tragedy of the addicts, their families and their victims, the cost to our society is enormous. It is an insidious scourge with a massive impact, effecting people from all demographics and all ages.

What a great visit we had to the RACQ Lifeflight hangar on Friday. The presentation was fascinating & the BBQ lunch enjoyed by all.

I think we were all amazed at how much this invaluable service is utilized; not just in emergency calls to rural areas, but anywhere an emergency evacuation is required & a land-based ambulance is either not feasible or too slow. So many people owe their well-being, or even their lives, to these amazing crew.

An enlightening & enjoyable vocational visit.
